Sin’s Unfolding

Everyone of us has difficulties with sin and if you say you don’t then you’re lying. Let’s look at how sin unfolds in our life and how we can avoid it.

How does sin start? It begins in the heart. Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things,
And desperately wicked. Who can know it?” Mark 7:21 “For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery.” Our sin starts in the inner man or as the Bible refers to it your heart. Your inner man brings up sin first. Your heart influences you to think on sinful things and remember how good or satisfying you thought it was? It begins as such a simple thought or suggestion moving you towards sin.

STOPPING POINT ONE: If you’re saved at this point of your thought process you should feel the Holy Spirit applying the brakes. The Holy Spirit Interrupts your thoughts and asks you what are you thinking? What are you doing? Wait a minute as a Christian is this the right thing to do? Here is the first promptings of the Lord to stop us. His Holy Spirit is bringing conviction on us to consider what we are about to do in light of the Gospel. When you feel this prompting stop now! Align your thought on what the Spirit is saying and walk or run away.

But, often after that initial warning we push the Holy Spirit aside so we can go back to dwell on our thoughts. We start thinking what’s the big deal I haven’t done anything yet and I can still think on this as long as I don’t go any further. My friend we are deceiving ourselves. It is like playing around a very slippery muddy edge of a pond. You’re taking a chance and saying I won’t slip but, alas you have already. Why? Because you did not stop when the Spirit spoke instead you took a step closer to the edge by convincing yourself you’re still in control. Romans 6:16 “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” You are already close to being hooked you just don’t know it yet. Just like the fish that bites the worm the hook is right there.

STOPPING POINT TWO: Run from the edge! Look at the worm and see the hook. Remember what has happened in the past and turn now. You need to adjust your thinking and see the whole picture not just that moment. Let the Holy Spirit reveal where this is going to go and step away.

Unfortunately the next step is moving to action. You have thought about your sin and how good it was before and how good it will be now. So you now you form in your mind the plan of how you will do the sin.You plan in your mind how you can accomplish this dominating obsession that your mind has approved. You are now at the very brink of the cliff. The only thing left is getting into position where you can fulfill your sin.

STOPPING POINT THREE: The Holy Spirit can still work in your heart. He might even bring things in position so your planning is interrupted. Now is the moment to obey. You must repent and run! Let the Holy Spirit guide you away. Stop and give your thoughts and your actions to him. If you have to physically remove yourself from the temptation do so. It is all about who is in control.

To Late: You have thought about your sin and formed how you will accomplish it. Now you make it happen and it is too late! You actually do whatever action you had in mind and you might even have a moment of gratification whether it is drinking, sex, smoking, doing a drugs, looking at pornogrpahy etc. But now that you have done it where is the satisfaction? Where is the lasting glory? It is not there. For a Christian there immediately follows the let down of sin and the conviction that falls over you for doing it. You have to ask was it worth it? And the answer is NO!

Friends we know how sins works, we know for the most part when it is coming on. Will we obey the Holy Spirit or not? Will we respect the Gospel of Jesus Christ or ignore it?
